Ernest Timothy Bate was born November 10, 1937 to Delbert Orgill Bate and Beatrice Marie Goodall in Salt Lake City, Utah in the family kitchen. His sister Gayle was 5 and was happy to have a little brother. From an early age Tim developed a love for music, starting with a harmonica that he was given. Tim spent most of his childhood playing outside with his favorite dog Junior, a Jack Russel terrier who would ride up on the bike with Tim and bark at the cute girls. And learning to play musical instruments.
Tim graduated from South High in Salt Lake in 1954, and shortly after joined the Navy for a short time before being honorably discharged. He then married Patsy Ann Cleghorn Sept. 1, 1961. They were blessed with their first daughter, Kellie Marie. After they divorced Tim decided to attend the University of Utah majoring in music education. Then, at one of his gigs at Salt Air where he used to broadcast on the radio, he met Judy Waters. They were married December 25, 1970. He graduated from the U in 1974. They were then blessed with 2 more kids, Alacia RaNae and LeAdelle Jayme. They were then sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on June 25, 1979. Afterward another 2 children arrived; Arthur Denton, and Leora Janelle.
Tim taught school for a time for Jordan school district, and then again up in Aberdeen Idaho. Then finally settling in Brigham City working for the post office. Through the years Tim had countless bands and recorded and wrote hundreds of original songs. He played in the Post Office Band and the family spent summers watching parades. He was always the right corner of the band and would often have the band break formation and snake through the streets and the crowds as they played. He used to play ragtime music at a place called Shakey’s Pizza. He also had his own big band, the Rhythmaires, who would go to retirement centers and play any song that was requested. It was fun for everyone who attended.
Tim loved all things Coca-Cola related and clocks. But his greatest love in life was music, he could always be found in the family room playing his keyboards and writing music. He was very proud to find out that his grandkids had inherited his musical abilities and would often give pointers on how to improve.
Tim passed away quietly surrounded by family on October 15, 2018. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, sister Beverly, many aunts, uncles, cousins and numerous friends. We are sure that the celebration upon his arrival in heaven was joyous. We are grateful for the knowledge we have that families can be together forever and look forward to the day we will all see him again.
